1.      Introduction. The Chairman Sapper Fitzmaurice welcomed the Management Committee to the Christmas meeting and with particular welcome to Sapper John Wilks to his first meeting as the BS Honorary Auditor. He is invited to attend each meeting.

4.         Matters Arising.

 

      There were no further matters arising.

 

5.         Finance.

 

  • Cost of Lunches in 2009.  The cost of lunches for 2009 will be £49.50.
  • Trial Balance. The Honorary Treasurer gave his trial balance as at 31 Oct   --  it is attached at Annex A.
  • On Line Banking.     The Honorary Treasurer was asked by the Chairman to enquire about On Line Banking and report back to the Committee at their meeting in Mar 08 with costs and other admin details.
  •  Adventurous & Challenging Pursuits. £2,000 authorised by the Committee has been paid to the RECCT. There have been six applications for grants this year and are shown at Annex B. The sum of £5,939 currently held by the Corps Treasurer on behalf of the Blythe Sappers. The Committee discussed the process of allocating these funds and generally approved the process in place.
  • Membership. Some Members have not paid their annual subscriptions. The Hon Treasurer sought the committees approval to ask Members for a £20 cheque for their initial joining fee and to complete the bankers standing order for the annual fees  --  the Committee agreed. The Chairman said he would write to Sapper Cunningham.
  • Membership Fees. It was agreed that in future a new Member would be asked to pay the initial joining fee of £20 by a cheque and complete the bankers standing order for £10 per year.
  • Defaulters.     It was further agreed that, where a new member has not completed the payments by 31st December, it will be assumed that the application to join is now no longer required.
  • Travelling Costs. It was agreed that the travelling costs for the Honorary Treasurer should be found by the Society  --  Agreed
  • Banking of Cheques.            The Hon Secretary agreed that more speedy action in the banking of cheques was required and he said that he would bank the cheques sooner than at present.
  • Gratuity.         The Hon Treasurer said that he had paid the sum of £100 to the Army & Navy Club for this year’s gratuity. 

 

6.         Corps Report.            The Secretary went through the Corps Report  -- 

this is attached at Annex C.

10.       Any Other Business Sapper Elvidge gave a report on the TA and said that he would endeavour to recruit suitable members of the TA into the Blythe Sappers.

1.     The 2008 allocation  to the Blythe Sappers Fund for Adventurous and Challenging Pursuits was £2000 and  paid on 27 November

2.    The total donated to date is £30,950.00  (2007 £28,950).  There were 5 grants in 2007 totalling £2,350.00.

 

 

3.    There have been Six A & CP grants so far in 2008 worth £2000.00

The Blythe Sappers  --  Corps Update

(as at 27th November 2008)

 

Corps currently running warm   --  but very hot for some specialists

 

Operations:

1.      Punching above our weight 8.73% of army but 10% in Iraq and 13% in Afghan

2.      Iraq (currently 32 Engr Regt) – on the home straight

3.      Afghanistan (currently 24 Cdo Engr Regt) –

                      we are in for the long haul but making slow progress

                      likely to increase Reconstruction and Development

                      important because of the high regional impact given the proximity of Pakistan

·                    Supporting air operations in 5 surrounding gulf countries

·                    Supporting other operations in Kosova and Tristan da Cunha

·                    48 Sqn completed Public Duties

 

Training:

·                       Continuing the foundation training in Canada

·                       RSME – P4 project good news for the future of our training establishments. 

Live on 5 Jan 09.

       TA – continue to grow; 72 Regt and 591 Sqn have come on stream this year

 

Manning:

·          Officers – good

·          Soldiers – down 10% (-777) but includes Future Army Structures (FAS) growth, but not P4 dividend (+300): therefore set to get better

·          People are producing the goods as evident by the plethora of awards

·          Proving our agility and flexibility – providing force support tasks and also delivering close support

·          Every soldier counts, so retention very important

 

            Sport:

·          Champions:

·        Rugby Union

·          Rugby League

·          Football

·          Swimming

·        Runners up:

·          Hockey

·          Skiing both disciplines

·          Water polo

·          Basketball

·          Tennis

 

In Addition

·          3 skiers selected for Euro and 1 for World Championships

·          Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race fastest crew

·          2 tri-athletes for World Championship

·          3 members of the army judo team

·          6 members of the army boxing squad incl ABA Champion

·          Combined services and army golf champion

 

Professional capability being recognised by ECUK

 

Equipment:

·          Well equipped and looking forward to TERRIER

·           But need to be careful we get the right equipment beyond Afghanistan

 

Summary

·          The Corps is hugely busy

·          The Corps is thriving
